"Not easy for mom to use, buttons terrible." 2009-12-09
By E. Schacht (The Divide)
I expected the latest Canon powershot for around $200 to OFCOURSE AUTOmatically be awesome. I will not give a long review. About functionality and ease of use- if you enjoy pressing buttons only to have another function take over instead, buy this camera. If you enjoy only being able to use your fingernails to select, a battery door that will surely snap off sooner than later, and pictures that are not as sharp as the previous models, then go ahead. Ofcourse I have been able to take some good shots with the legendary Canon name, but I am very upset that someone bought this for my Mom. She refuses to use it based on hours of frustration with buttons that were cheaply designed for profit, not the true enjoyment of the user. The next powershot will probably be great, you just never know.

"Love my little green camera!!!" 2009-12-09
By Susan K. Danker (Lady Lake, FL)
This is the second Canon camera I've owned. I just gave my Canon SD750 to my son so he can take pictures of his carpentry work. I needed a camera with more MPG's to photograph my Jewelry for my new website. I just love the ease of getting good quality pictures that show the beauty of the Swarovski crystals I make my jewelry with. Great sparkle quality!!!!!

My camera is always close at hand, you never know when something beautiful will catch your eye, out comes my Canon. Point and voila!! a great picture.

"Great Camera at Great Price" 2009-12-09
By jason_francisco (San Francisco)
Pros

1. very light weight, small but easy to handle, menu easy to manage/navigate

2. improved quality pic taking. auto adjust to different environment/lighting, auto adjust to shaky hand. wide screen option is provided.

3. good looking design, multicolor, i got a green color cam to join Obama's "Green xyz" rah rah.

4. good pricing. $149. cheaper than my AS Powershot

Cons

1. battery. need to walk around with a battery charger. inconvenient. nice if rechargeable from PC's USB port.

2. memory. camera comes without memory card, fortunately, i can swap the card from my other PowerShot cam.

3. cam pouch. nice if a small cloth pouch is provided.

overall, great price for a great camera.

 "Great little camera" 2009-12-09
By B. Krautbauer (Minneapolis, MN USA)
This is our second (or third?) small digital camera. The first couple were first generation models with minimum features and resolution. Then we started using big DSLRs. I expected this 'little camera' to have minimal quality, but I was wrong. This camera approaches the DSLRs in both features and image quality. I was especially impressed with the video it took. The only negative I've seen is that when you zoom in at some point it switches over to 'digital zoom' and the quality drops dramatically. This can be turned off, so it's really not a problem, just something to be aware of. My wife was looking for a small camera she could have with us when the DSLR was too big and this little guy more than fills the bill.

 "For most people" 2009-12-08
By Jack Parker
This camera is not your average camera. I must confess I had Canon cameras ever since I started purchasing digital cameras. Therefore I might be bias by giving an opinion without testing the others out there. Although, I did at one point own a Casio Slim camera and was satisfied. However, the picture quality and the features that a Canon offers I must say beats the rest by far.

Good luck and happy snapping.

 "Excellent dSLR" 2009-12-09
By M. Hu (Maryland, USA)
Have used Nikon film SLR gears for many years and turned to Canon digital P&S (I perfer those large CCD sensor models, i.e. S400, A610, A620) in the past six years, T1i brings back the SLR feeling and it picture quality is excellent, event with the kit lens.

The only downside of this camera is that it only does 1080p video by 20 frame/second, wish there will be a firmware update to increase it to 24 frame/second.

 "Great quality pictures" 2009-12-09
By Norman J. Papp
This is my first DSLR camera, and it is a joy to use. I find I am taking more pictures then I ever did with my old point and shoot. It has the preset settings like a point and shoot, however the manual functions give me more options while shooting in low light that I could not acheive with the auto functions. I ordered the camera on a Monday and received it on Friday. Very pleased the the fast shipping. I would recommend getting a telephoto lense. The 18-55 lense that came with the kit is Ok at best. Also I would recommend getting a tripod if your planning on using a telephoto or macro lenses.

"Early review but so far... this piece is stunning!" 2009-12-09
By Bay Area Cooler (Bay area, CA)
This is my first (D)SLR. And I have to qualify myself as one having NO photographic skills except to point the lens in the right direction ;) Bought Canon SX20 IS as I wanted a simple camera with nice zoom and movie mode but SX20 was a complete disaster. So, decided to upgrade to T1i based on several recommendations. Have been reading and learning about photography and playing with this camera & kit lens for about a week now. So far I have been impressed with the handling of the camera and the image quality. Images in fluorescent light are off, but at least I know that AWB is not easy. The menu sometimes is a bit of a pain - like selecting sepia tone etc - you have to hit so many buttons.

Video looks good on camera but lots of jerkiness/streaks while playing on PC - due to slightly older (2 years) computer + software. Converting these MOV files to VOB does not show any problem and plays smoothly. I think it is the auto exposure compensation (not flicker noise) that causes some changes in light while panning but I am not sure. Havent worked on it too much.

I am sure I have only skimmed the surface on what this camera can do but truly this is a great buy.

 "Canon EOS T1i" 2009-12-08
By Kathleen Burke (OH)
I like the camera but I am not completely impressed with the quality of pictures. The video does not download properly and is very jumpy. I know very little about cameras and need to learn to use it properly so this, I'm sure, is the problem. I do wish that I had spent less for a camera. I'm just not that impressed with the video. I will add more to this post as time goes on.

 "Heads up Mac users" 2009-12-06
By Mr. Bill (Los Altos, CA USA)
Just a little FYI for Mac users of the T1i bundled software (I presume the 90%+ buyers who are Windows people do not have this problem). Several elements of the T1i software suite do not work under Mac OS X 10.6 (a.k.a. "Snow Leopard"). Most notably, plugging the camera into a USB port fires off the Canon EOS Utility, which then promptly crashes. I have been emailing with Canon product support for 3 months now (?!). There is a work around (which involves not using the EOS Utility, how's that for a fix?), but, personally, if I had known about this, I wouldn't have gotten the camera.

While Canon acknowledges the problem, their weasel-wording on their replies leads me to suspect that they don't intend to fix this.

Mac users already know that Snow Leopard, while nominally an "upgrade" is in reality a collection of bug fixes for which Apple charges $30. Unlike going from XP to Vista or Vista to W7, I presume that the vast majority of OS X 10.5 users out there have "upgraded" to 10.6. If this describes you, then you should know that although you can still download and edit your picture files, you do it in a hokey way that involves crashes and not getting to all the features.

Why 4 stars? This has nothing to do with how the camera works taking pictures. For that, I'll leave you to the other reviews.

It may be the slimmest Digital ELPH Canon has ever created, but the impact couldn't be bigger. The PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH captivates the senses with bold saturated colors and a daringly original design that matches the intensity of Canon's most innovative camera technology. Even when picture-taking conditions seem pretty unforgiving, you've got Canon on your side. So the shots you used to miss are the images you'll now be sharing, and the movies you never took before will be HD unforgettable.

"Great camera, flimsy battery/sd card cover" 2009-12-09
By R. Garcia (Chicago, U.S.)
I bought the camera for its portability (and it was on sale too at $169). I also own a DSLR but for everyday photos I'd rather carry one that fits in my pocket. Excellent picture quality. I set mine to Program mode, My Colors to Vivid, and Auto-ISO (default). Crappy shots at high ISOs but you don't expect much from a compact. That's what DSLRs are for. Fast focusing and accurate most of the time. I will give this camera 5 stars if not for a flimsy battery cover. It will break easily if you're not extra careful.

 "Everything and more" 2009-12-08
By K. Reinert (SC, USA)
I had researched several cameras before making this purchase. I typically take pictures with a Nikon D50, but I wanted a point-and-shoot that I could carry around more easily but still take decent pictures. This camera has not disappointed me. It's tiny but incredibly sturdy, and takes excellent quality pictures. In addition, I had video recorded a Christmas concert, and when I played it on my computer I expanded the video to "full-screen" and the image did not become grainy at all. I love this camera. It's an absolute steal for this price.

I love that it is portable. I am kinda bummed there is not an action setting. The zoom capability is awesome. I am still experimenting with setting my own settings. Because it is small it is hard to keep it steady but with practice it has worked out. All around a great camera.

 "Disappointed" 2009-12-07
By S. Mathew (Minneapolis, MN USA)
Records decent HD in Quicktime .MOV format - not easy for Windows PC users. Cannot stream to PS3 or XBox360. Picture quality on Auto is terrible for a 12MP camera - probably cause the lens is small. My 8yr old 4MP canon has much better quality pics.

p.s Amazon doesn't mention the format HD movies are taken in - this is not good. Cannot buy cameras from Amazon.

bought Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6 for Canon Rebel XS. I was using Class 4 and jump to class 6 was a noticeable difference in speed and the number of photos. When in automatic mode this thing took 18 pictures in continues mode and wasn't slowing down! Class 4 only took like 12 to 18 then it lagged. Love Transcend products especially their SDHC memory cards, I trust them and they have never let me down on ANY of their products.
